ABOUT DR MAURICE GUZMAN
Dr Maurice Guzman is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip and knee surgery, orthopaedic trauma, in addition to bone and soft tissue tumours.
Educated in New South Wales, Dr Guzman graduated with Honours in a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Western Australia. He also holds an Honours degree in Applied Science from The University of Sydney. He completed his orthopaedic specialist surgical training in Sydney and was admitted as a Fellow of the Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA) in January 2016.
Dr Guzman has completed specialist training in arthroscopic and reconstructive joint surgery and hip and knee arthroplasty (replacement) surgery in Australia. He later relocated to the United Kingdom to complete a fellowship at the highly prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, specialising in bone and soft tissue tumours and complex joint arthroplasty. In addition to this, Dr Guzman completed observerships in Bologna, Florence and Pisa (Italy) to refine his knowledge and skills in the surgical management of patients with bone and soft tissue tumours.
Dr Guzman has worked in major trauma centres in metropolitan and regional hospitals in New South Wales and Western Australia, refining his skills in trauma cases to optimise the outcomes for patients.
Dr Guzman is actively involved in research. His work has been published in several prestigious journals on Orthopaedics. To further refine his skills and gain more experience, he volunteered with the Red Cross in the Emergency Relief services, and in 2008 volunteered in East Timor with the Alola Foundation and Bario Pite Clinic.
Dr Guzman's passion for his work and his desire to constantly improve his skills has driven him to learn from the best and the brightest in the world. He is actively engaged in training and keeps himself up to date on the latest advances in orthopaedic surgery by attending scientific meetings and courses in Australia and overseas. This dedication is what allows him to offer the best and the latest orthopaedic treatments to his patients.
Dr Guzman has official appointments at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Chris O'Brien Lifehouse and North Shore Private Hospital. He consults from his private rooms in Newtown, and also offers appointments for patients with bone and soft tissue tumours at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse in Camperdown.

Does Dr Guzman only see private patients?
Dr Guzman welcomes all patients, whether you have private health insurance or not.
Where will I have my appointment to see Dr Guzman?
As a private patient, Dr Guzman will see you in his consulting rooms in Newtown.
Dr Guzman can also see public patients in his private consulting rooms or in the Outpatient Orthopaedic Clinic at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
For all patients who are being investigated/treated for bone or soft tissue tumours, Dr Guzman will see you in his private rooms or at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Where would I have my surgery performed?
Dr Guzman is accredited to operate at the following hospitals:
- Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (public and private patients)
- The RPA Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics (public and private patients)
- Chris O’Brien Lifehouse (private patients)
- North Shore Private Hospital (private patients)
What is the benefit of using my private health insurance?
As a private patient, Dr Guzman can admit you to any of the above listed hospitals where he holds accreditation. This often means that you are able to have your surgery performed more promptly. As a private patient, Dr Guzman will be the primary surgeon operating on you.
What happens if I don't have private health insurance?
If you don’t have private health insurance and require a planned procedure, you can either be admitted as a:
i. Public patient; or
ii. Private self-insured patientAs a public patient, Dr Guzman will place you on a public waitlist for your procedure. As Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is an accredited teaching hospital, your surgery may be performed by Dr Guzman’s training registrar, under his direct supervision.
Alternatively, being admitted as a private self-insured patient, Dr Guzman assures you that he will be the primary surgeon operating on you. Whilst there is an associated fee with this type of admission, you can claim a rebate from Medicare for the procedure.
How much will my surgery cost?
Following your consultation, Dr Guzman will provide you with an estimate of his fees which will outline the cost of his services and the estimated rebates you will receive from your health fund. As a private patient, you receive your first six weeks of post-operative follow-up care free of charge.
