Orthopaedic Trauma
Not all orthopaedic injuries require surgery, however, some require surgical intervention to ensure the best possible outcome and a return to full functioning. Injury can occur at any point in your life. An injury may have resulted from a simple fall, a sports injury or a car accident; regardless of the mechanism, the injury can affect your life greatly. Broken bones and injury to the soft tissues require prompt and thorough assessment and management. With the assistance of a multi-disciplinary team, Dr Guzman can help you by treating your injury and ensuring you receive the rehabilitation required to help you return to home and work life.
Treatment for broken bones (fractures)
Fractures can occur in many ways, and can also be treated in numerous ways, with the best treatment option depending on the type of fracture and soft tissue injury you have sustained. Dr Guzman will guide you through the management and rehabilitation/ recovery specific to your injury. Treatment options include:
- Immobilising the fracture site with a cast/splint
- Closed reduction (straightening the bone)
- Open reduction and internal fixation (fixing the bone with wires, plates and screws or rods inside the bone)
- External fixation (stabilising the bone with a frame outside of the body)
- Replacement surgery (replacement of a joint)
Treatment for Soft Tissue Injuries
Following an injury or accident, damage may have occurred to your soft tissues. These injuries can occur in isolation or in association with a broken bone or dislocation of a joint (abnormal separation of a joint). Soft tissues that can be injured include muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Injury to these tissues can affect your life greatly. Dr Guzman will work with you to determine the most appropriate course of treatment to ensure your recovery.
